Serum calcium measurements are affected by albumin levels because calcium binds to albumin in the blood. In hypoalbuminemia (low albumin), total calcium appears falsely low — use this calculator to find the true ionized calcium equivalent.

Normal range: 8.5–10.5 mg/dL
Hypercalcemia: >10.5 mg/dL (mild), >12 mg/dL (symptomatic), >14 mg/dL (crisis)
Hypocalcemia: <8.5 mg/dL
