The Wegovy pill is the once-daily tablet version of Wegovy (semaglutide), FDA-approved in December 2025 for chronic weight management. It works the same way as the weekly Wegovy injection, but it must be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, followed by a 30-minute wait before food, drinks, or other pills.
The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, the same GLP-1 medicine found in Wegovy and Ozempic injections, in a once-daily tablet. It is approved for adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related health condition (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol), to lose excess weight and keep it off along with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
How Does It Work?
GLP-1 is a natural gut hormone that slows stomach emptying, increases fullness, and reduces appetite and food cravings. Semaglutide mimics this hormone. Because semaglutide is a protein-like (peptide) medicine that the stomach normally breaks down, the pill includes an absorption enhancer — which is why the timing and water rules below matter so much. If they aren't followed, very little of the medicine gets absorbed.
How to Take the Wegovy Pill
- Take one pill each morning when you wake up, on an empty stomach
- Swallow it whole with no more than 4 ounces (half a glass) of plain water — not coffee, juice, or any other drink
- Do not split, crush, or chew the pill
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking your other morning medicines
- Keep pills in the original closed bottle, at room temperature, in a dry place
- Missed a dose? Skip it and take your usual dose the next morning. Never take two pills in one day
💊 Taking thyroid medicine too? Levothyroxine is also taken on an empty stomach in the morning. Oral semaglutide can increase how much levothyroxine your body absorbs, so your thyroid levels may need to be rechecked after starting. Ask us how to time the two medicines.
Dose Schedule
Like all GLP-1 medicines, the Wegovy pill is started low and increased gradually to reduce stomach side effects:
| Days | Dose (once daily) |
|---|---|
| 1–30 | 1.5 mg |
| 31–60 | 4 mg |
| 61–90 | 9 mg |
| 91 onward | 25 mg (maintenance) |
Your provider may keep you on a lower dose for longer than 30 days if you are having side effects. The dose steps are different from Rybelsus, so the two products cannot be swapped pill-for-pill.
What Results to Expect
In the 64-week OASIS 4 trial of adults with obesity or overweight, people taking the 25 mg Wegovy pill lost an average of about 13.6% of their body weight, compared with about 2.2% on placebo. Among people who stayed on treatment, average weight loss was about 16.6%, similar to what is seen with Wegovy injections. Results vary from person to person, and weight tends to return if the medicine is stopped without other changes in place.
Wegovy Pill vs. Other GLP-1 Options

Side Effects
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, and heartburn. They are most noticeable when starting or increasing the dose and usually ease with time. In OASIS 4, about 3 in 4 people taking the pill reported a stomach-related side effect (versus about 4 in 10 on placebo), but only about 3% stopped the medicine because of one. Eating smaller meals, stopping when full, and avoiding greasy foods can help.
⚠️ Important safety information: Like all semaglutide products, the Wegovy pill carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in animal studies. Do not take it if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Other risks include pancreatitis (severe belly pain that may spread to the back), gallbladder problems, kidney problems from dehydration, low blood sugar when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas, and worsening of diabetic eye disease in people with diabetes. Do not combine it with any other semaglutide or GLP-1 medicine, and stop it at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.
Who Might Choose the Pill?
The Wegovy pill may suit people who want semaglutide's proven results but prefer not to inject, have needle anxiety, or travel often without easy refrigeration. It may be a poorer fit for people who take several morning medicines, find it hard to wait 30 minutes before coffee or breakfast, or have a hard time remembering a daily routine — for them, a weekly injection or Foundayo (no food or water rules) may be easier. Insurance coverage for weight-loss medicines varies widely; our team can help you check your plan.
